About the position
Purpose:
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centred care in theatre. This role includes preparing and assisting during surgical procedures, ensuring adherence to safety and infection control protocols, and collaborating with the surgical team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Key Performance Areas:
Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Care
- Prepare patients for surgical procedures, ensuring informed consent and pre-operative assessments are completed.
- Provide post-operative care, monitoring patients for any complications and ensuring a smooth recovery process.
Intra-Operative Support
- Assist surgeons and anaesthetists during surgical procedures, ensuring adherence to sterile techniques.
- Handle and account for surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Maintain a high standard of aseptic techniques to prevent infections.
Patient Safety and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, infection control standards, and legislative requirements.
- Adhere to health and safety regulations, reporting any risks or incidents as necessary.
Medication Administration and Management
- Administer prescribed medications safely and accurately, monitoring patient responses.
- Maintain proper documentation of medications and treatments.
Theatre Efficiency and Equipment Management
- Ensure the availability and proper functioning of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Assist in managing theatre stock, ensuring proper storage and usage of supplies.
Record-Keeping and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including surgical notes and medication administration records.
- Report any deviations from standard procedures or adverse events promptly.
Requirements:
- Qualification: Diploma or Degree in Nursing, with current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 3 years in an acute care setting.
- Theatre Experience: Proven experience working in a theatre environment, assisting in various surgical procedures.
- Clinical Skills: Strong knowledge of perioperative nursing care, infection control protocols, and surgical safety procedures.
- Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with hospital policies, health and safety regulations, and infection prevention standards.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in handling surgical instruments, theatre equipment, and patient monitoring systems.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Attention to Detail: Strong observational skills and the ability to respond quickly in high-pressure situations.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays as required.
