About the position

Our client, a large and well-known automotive production business, is currently seeking to hire an experienced Sustainability Strategist Specialist to join their growing team based in Kariega, Eastern Cape. In this role, you will be responsible for developing, establishing and driving the implementation of innovative strategies that minimize the company's ecological footprint, as well as to enhance the sustainability of supply chain, together with promoting the adoption of eco-friendly technologies.

Minimum Requirements:

  • National Diploma/ Degree in Environmental Management/Sciences, Sustainability Management or Engineering
  • Post-graduate qualification in Business Management - preferred
  • At least 5 years' experience in the manufacturing/ similar industries
  • 3 years' experience in a Sustainability Management/ Environmental Sustainability/ relevant leadership role within the manufacturing/ production/ engineering or similar relevant industry
  • Experience with ESG reporting
  • Experience in scoping large scale sustainability projects including funding solutions
  • Influence in national and regional policies and legislation
  • Knowledge of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation - advantageous
  • Experience in water and effluent treatment technologies - advantageous

Required skills:

  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office)
  • Proven track record in communication across various levels in the organization
  • Ability to initiate, build and maintain relationships with government stakeholders particularly regional and municipal level as well as Department of Trade and Industry
  • Proven analytical skills with an innovative approach to problem-solving
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001
  • Influence in national and regional policies and legislation

Main duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • To create a comprehensive framework for the full and effective implementation of a Sustainability Management System for the Group and its Subsidiaries.
  • To strengthen the Group's sustainability performance by collaborating with cross-functional teams to embed sustainability principles into product development, manufacturing processes, corporate policies, and long-term plant development strategies
  • To implement the Group sustainability strategy.
  • To foster a strong culture of sustainability across the organization by driving continuous improvement and building accountability at all levels as well as active engagement with communities and partners.
  • To drive continuous improvement and strengthen business sustainability by generating revenue from production waste streams.
  • To strengthen the company's financial position by proactively identifying and leveraging government incentive schemes for which the company qualifies.
  • To drive Continuous Sustainability Improvement by strengthening the organization's sustainability performance through accurate and comprehensive non-financial reporting.
  • To protect and strengthen the company's reputation by proactively addressing potential trust issues among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Protecting the organization from legal, trust, and reputational risks by ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements
  • To enhance the quality and accuracy of Sustainability reporting by supporting statistical analysis and data management processes.
  • Enhance awareness and achieve a positive mindset shift towards sustainability within the organization
