About the position
An opportunity exists for an experienced Structural Engineer to take responsibility for the design, analysis, and supervision of reinforced concrete structures, steel frameworks, and related infrastructure. This role is suited to a registered engineering professional with strong technical expertise, site-based supervision experience, and the ability to contribute to multidisciplinary project delivery.
As the Structural Engineer, you will apply advanced structural engineering principles, lead project design work, and support construction supervision while ensuring compliance with industry standards, quality systems, and contractual requirements. You will also coordinate small teams and provide technical input across multiple project phases.
Key Responsibilities (amongst others):
- Conduct feasibility studies by gathering project information, compiling technical reports, and making recommendations
- Apply advanced structural engineering principles to design reinforced concrete and steel structures
- Create detailed design drawings and specifications using industry-standard software and tools
- Contribute to the preparation of tenders, RFQs, BOQs, and procurement documentation.
- Provide expert technical inputs during design reviews, project execution, and approval of submissions
- Oversee construction supervision, including quality control, site inspections, and as-built documentation
- Coordinate small teams delivering structural engineering components
- Develop project schedules, budgets, and technical specifications in alignment with PMO requirements
- Participate in project meetings and ensure deliverables align with broader project goals
- Support operational targets through issue resolution, proactive monitoring, and ongoing technical assistance
- Maintain accurate documentation in line with quality and audit requirements
Qualification(s) required:
- BTech in Structural or Civil Engineering
- Active ECSA registration as [URL Removed] or [URL Removed] (compulsory)
- Valid SA Driver's Licence (Code B) as travel to project sites will be required
Experience required:
- Minimum 6 years' experience in structural design of reinforced concrete and steel frameworks
- At least 2-3 years' site-based supervision experience on structural projects (e.g., resident engineer role)
- Experience in project management, feasibility studies, and design reviews
- Compilation of procurement documentation (tenders, specifications, drawings, BOQs).
- Contract administration and stakeholder liaison
- Technical proposal writing and operational site support
Knowledge and Skills required:
- Proficiency in structural design software (e.g., Prokon, Tekla, Robot, or equivalent)
- Strong knowledge of reinforced concrete and steel structures within integrated engineering systems
- Familiarity with national and international design codes (SANS 1200, SANS 0400, SANS structural codes)
- Experience with contract administration under JBCC, NEC4, GCC, and FIDIC
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, MS Word, MS Excel, Adobe, Google Drive, and similar tools
- Knowledge of ISO9001 Quality Systems and government procurement processes
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical report-writing skills
- Effective communication (verbal and written) with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly
