About the position
My client based in Cape Town , is currently looking for a Scrum Master to join them on an independent contract basis
The primary objective of the Scrum Master is to help the team achieve delivery goals through effective collaboration, ownership, transparency, and sustained velocity. The SM proactively identifies, removes, or escalates impediments and supports the Product Owner in maximising value delivery while maintaining focus on scope, quality, and priorities.
Scrum Master Responsibilities
- Demonstrates Lean-Agile leadership, coaching the team and business to adopt Agile values, principles, and best practices.
- Serves as the team's facilitator and change agent, continuously challenging traditional development norms and promoting Agile ways of working.
- Enables the team to consistently meet Sprint goals, improve velocity, quality, predictability, and flow.
- Guides estimation practices, including normalised User Story estimation and higher-level estimation for features, themes, epics, and releases.
- Understands upcoming enabler work, delivery dependencies, and quality expectations, sequencing work appropriately without driving technical decisions.
- Facilitates all Agile ceremonies, including:
- Backlog Refinement
- Daily Stand-ups
- Sprint Planning (Part 1 & 2)
- Scrum-of-Scrums
- End-of-Sprint Reviews/Demos
- Sprint Retrospectives
- Actively removes impediments, engaging external stakeholders where issues fall outside the team's control to ensure uninterrupted delivery.
- Fosters a culture of continuous improvement, technical discipline, quality, and efficiency.
- Supports communities of practice and facilitates the establishment and adherence to Definition of Done (DoD) at User Story, Sprint, and Release levels.
- Continuously improves team dynamics and performance, addressing interpersonal challenges and escalating people-related issues to line management when required.
Scrum Master Skills
- Exceptional knowledge of Agile and Scrum theory, principles, and practices.
- Proven ability to coach teams and stakeholders in Agile ways of working.
- Strong understanding of iterative and incremental development methodologies.
- Working knowledge of software development and DevOps practices.
- Proficient in JIRA and Confluence.
- Insurance industry experience is advantageous.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Scrum Master Experience
Scrum Framework Expertise
- Solid, hands-on experience with Scrum events, roles, and artifacts.
- Ability to independently facilitate Scrum ceremonies while adapting them to team maturity and context.
Leadership and Coaching
- Demonstrated experience coaching teams toward continuous improvement.
- Strong conflict resolution skills with the ability to navigate complex team dynamics.
- Embodies servant leadership, promoting accountability, collaboration, and empowerment.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Comfortable engaging with Product Owners, Project/Programme Managers, and business stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage external dependencies and remove organisational or process-related impediments.
