About the position

An opportunity is available for a Theatre-trained Registered Nurse to join a busy surgical environment in Knysna. This role would suit a clinically confident theatre nurse with strong scrub experience, particularly within General Surgery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to patients throughout the perioperative period.
  • Perform scrub duties during surgical procedures, ensuring the sterile field is maintained at all times.
  • Prepare the operating theatre, instruments, equipment and supplies according to the requirements of each procedure.
  • Assist the surgical team during General, Orthopaedic and Neuro procedures where applicable.
  • Maintain strict adherence to aseptic techniques and infection prevention protocols.
  • Conduct accurate instrument, swab and needle counts in accordance with theatre procedures.
  • Monitor patients closely and promote patient safety throughout the surgical process.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of patient documentation and theatre records.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant legislation, professional standards, ethical requirements and nursing competencies.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary theatre team to promote a positive and effective working environment.
  • Participate in flexi-shifts and on-call duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing with current registration with SANC.
  • Post Basic Diploma in Operating Theatre Nursing.
  • Scrub experience in General Surgery is essential.
  • Experience in Orthopaedic and Neuro specialities would be beneficial.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Participative and collaborative approach, with the ability to contribute towards a healthy, positive and value-based team culture.
  • Current knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, industrial relations, standards, codes, ethics and competency requirements applicable to Nurses working in Theatre.
  • Computer proficiency would be an advantage.
  • Willingness to work flexi-shifts and participate in on-call duties.
