Operations Manager - Logistics (KZN Hub)

About the Role
The Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring the seamless execution of inbound and outbound logistics processes at the KZN Hub. This role requires a hands-on leader to maintain strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and uphold contractual Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
The successful candidate will oversee freight handling, container offloading, product consolidation, and operational reporting, while driving cost efficiency, strategic workforce planning, and strict compliance with legal and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Operational Excellence & SLA Compliance
- SOP Management: Document, maintain, and rigorously enforce all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across day and night shifts.
- Inbound Logistics: Ensure all inbound freight documentation is prepared a minimum of 5 working days prior to arrival. Overseas the processing of inbound freight (receiving, sorting, labelling, GRV'ing, and routing) within 24 hours of arrival.
- Container & Turnaround Management: Oversee container offloading as per client SLAs. Ensure timeous offloading of local transporters and import containers to eliminate demurrage costs.
- Stock & Quality Control: Manage effective freight checking (condition, quantity, and description) before signing off GRVs. Effectively plan container product consolidation and manage discrepancies.
- Space Optimization: Manage floor space dynamically, ensuring product stacking aligns with tolerance levels to maximize warehouse utilization and eliminate staged/aging freight.
- Query Resolution: Act as the escalation point to investigate and resolve discrepancies, damages, shortages, and operational queries within a strict 48-hour window.
- Distribution, Fleet & Administration
- Linehaul Planning: Execute outbound depot linehaul planning in the most cost-effective manner, identifying direct-to-store deliveries to eliminate double handling.
- Stakeholder Communication: Facilitate daily operations meetings with all depots to discuss volumes and distribution plans. Maintain professional communication with customers and stores.
- Financial & Asset Control: Monitor wages, overtime, and departmental spend. Oversee daily material handling machinery (MHE) inspections, IT equipment, and asset transfers/disposals (including monthly reporting).
- Reporting: Generate, analyze, and maintain operational KPIs, WIP (Work-in-Progress) reports, and daily volume/receiving progress reports.
- Strategic Leadership & Cost Control
- Convert organizational objectives into actionable operational plans aligned with regional strategy.
- Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational metrics, implementing swift corrective actions where required.
- Introduce and enforce proactive cost-control measures that balance budget efficiency with premium service quality.
- Team Management, Development & Engagement
- Workforce Planning: Plan and adjust staffing levels dynamically to meet fluctuating operational demands and ensure optimal productivity.
- Staff Development: Drive continuous development through structured training and skills programmes, empowering staff to take accountability.
- Culture & Discipline: Maintain open, transparent communication. Enforce daily housekeeping standards, dress codes, and strict adherence to company disciplinary policies and procedures.
Candidate Requirements
Minimum Qualifications & Experience:
- Education: A completed tertiary qualification (Degree / Diploma) in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, or Business Management.
- Experience: Minimum of 8+ years' experience within the Logistics, Transport, or Warehousing industry.
- Management Experience: A minimum of 5 years in a dedicated managerial/supervisory role within a high-volume logistics hub.
Technical Skills & Competencies:
- Software Proficiency: Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) for data analysis and reporting.
- System Competence: Proven experience working with WMS, TMS, and KPI tracking tools to monitor operational performance.
- Financial Acumen: Solid understanding of budget management, overtime control, and operational cost-efficiency.
- Leadership & Conflict Resolution: Strong capability to lead diverse teams across day/night shifts, resolve conflicts fairly, and maintain a disciplined environment.
- Problem Solving: Strong analytical skills to interpret complex operational data and implement immediate corrective actions.
