About the position

Are you a high-impact, strategic manufacturing leader ready to drive operational excellence across a complex, multi-site FMCG environment?

GROUP OPERATIONS EXECUTIVE 

The executive management opportunity has arisen at Group level in line with the strategic objectives of the organization to address medium- and long-term objectives. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and forming part of the Group Executive Management Committee, the Operations Executive will lead and oversee the operations of the business.

PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Operations Executive will be responsible for enhancing the internal organization’s Operational processes and infrastructure within the operations value chain, which will allow the organization to continue to grow and fulfil its mission.
The role shall encompass inter alia, the following:
o Strategy & Planning – Developing strategies, operating plans and implementing short, medium- and long-term plans to leverage the full potential of the Operations function in the group (front to end).
o Manufacturing – Maintaining control of diverse operations with a team of seasoned General Works Managers to achieve acceptable throughput at the agreed quality standards whilst transforming the manufacturing platforms to world class business standards.
o Innovation & Technical Projects – Developing strategies and implementing plans to drive best practices, efficiencies, world class manufacturing standards, excellence in quality as well as capital projects.
o Health, Safety and Environmental compliance – Creating a safety-first culture whilst simultaneously guiding the Operations teams to ensure compliance to all relevant legal standards.
KEY DELIVERABLES
1. People Leadership and Management
- Perform the duties expected of the Executive Management Team Member.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations within the Operations Function of the Group.
- Collaborate with and lead a senior team of General Managers and Functional Specialists.
- Drive people engagement to ensure full alignment to group strategies from executive to shop floor level
- Ensure implementation of industrial relations strategies
- Maintain a positive and ethical work climate that is conducive to attracting, retaining and retaining a diverse group of top-quality employees at all levels.
- Collaborate with the CEO in executing the operational strategies and plans mandated by the Board within the own area of responsibility.

2. Strategy Development, Planning and Implementation
- Develop the strategic direction for the Operations environment inclusive of all the critical levers within the value chain namely: Planning
- Strategic Procurement
- Manufacturing
- Innovation & Technical
- Health & Safety
- Develop and lead initiatives to drive productivity and efficiency across operations
- Lead the capital budgeting process to ensure alignment to group and operations strategy

3. Managing Multi-Site Manufacturing Platforms
- Develop and implement strategies and plans to enhance productivity across the various manufacturing platforms namely:
- Lead Production planning aligned to sales forecasting and optimisation of production runs.
- Adherence to required Quality standards as per the respective product specifications.
- Set comprehensive goals for performance and growth in the manufacturing platforms.
- Implement and maintain proper asset care programs to ensure that assets are maintained to operate at optimal levels.

4. Innovation and Technical

- Managing all capital projects across the Operations function.

Driving innovation projects across the Operations function to optimise on capabilities.
o Lead capital expenditure management process from identification of the projects through to implementation Ensure the development, implementation and attainment of health and safety practices across all operations
o Drive a ‘Safety First’ culture to deliver a zero-harm environment.
o Implement governance framework to ensure all operations within the group are in compliance with all relevant Environmental, Health and Safety legislation.
o Coordinate Group EHS with a Team of Dedicated localized Specialists.

5. Cost Control
- Leading the preparation of the annual budgets for the Operations function.
- Reviewing the actual costs against budget monthly or periodically.
- Achieving cost economics wherever possible in the overall interest of the Company.
-Encouraging the cost-conscious approach by the Management Teams throughout the function.
- Lead productivity initiative’s to drive cost efficiency across all operations.

6. Management of Group Assets and Strategic Equipment
- Ensure optimal management of group assets within all operations
- Ensure effective asset care management processes and systems in place
- Manage all strategic equipment: Compressors, generators, boilers etc.

SPECIFIC ATTRIBUTES
- Proven experience as a Manufacturing or Operations Executive
- Thorough understanding of overall business functions such as HR, Finance, Marketing, Sales, Logistics, etc.
- Demonstrable competency in strategic planning and execution on implementation of agreed strategies.
- Advanced knowledge and skills of running factories – end to end.
- Comprehensive experience in procurement strategies, methodologies and cost optimisation drives.
- Working knowledge of data analysis and performance / operation metrics.
- Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities.
- Aptitude in decision-making and problem solving.
- Executive maturity and relationship management.
- Ability to manage across various levels in the organization including the aptitude to manage complex professional relationships within the matrix structure.
- Ability to manage finances of the Operations Function through and with the team.
- Possess the above average aptitude to see the end-results through the eyes of the consumer and customer.
- Ability to work within a team.
- Ability to manage projects.
- Ability to manage diverse operations across multiple sites

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- MS Office – Computer literate
- Functional Knowledge of OSH Act and environmental legislation
- Experience in implementing world class manufacturing tools and processes such as TPM, Lean, Six Sigma
- Excellent Interpersonal skills
- Management Principles
- Strategic Orientation
- Commercial acumen so to engage meaningfully at executive level
- Leading senior manufacturing leaders and teams
- Industrial relations management

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering or commerce
- A Postgraduate Qualification/MBA/MBL will serve as an added advantage
- A Government Certificate of Competence – Factories will serve as an added advantage
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience leading manufacturing operations
- Drivers Licence
- Own vehicle
