About the position
Background:
- The Wits Diagnostic Innovation Hub is a division of Wits Health Consortium
- Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
- WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics
Main purpose of the job:
- To enroll relevant participants, collect samples and abstract medical records
Location:
- Wits VIDA - Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital
Key performance areas:
Recruitment and Screening
- Screen patient files and identify potential patients for clinical study
- Do three-hourly rounds in Obstetrics high care to identify eligible participants
- Do regular rounds in labour ward admissions, first stage, second stage and theatre to identify eligible participants
- Enrol participants by informing them about the study and obtain informed consent according to SOPs
- Complete relevant study documentation / questionnaires and checklists
- To ensure all eligible participants are approached
Clinical Assessments
- Draw the necessary cord bloods, maternal bloods and vaginal/ rectal swabs and breastmilk from patients and send samples or specimens to laboratory in accordance with study SOPs
- To assist mothers with expressing breastmilk
- To ensure all cord blood is collected
- Report any adverse event to Study Coordinators or Medical Officers
- Prepare sample packs (Maternal packs, vaginal swabs, blood sample holders etc.) on a daily basis and ensure that the correct packs are used to collect the specimens
Administration
- Collect required data from participant medical records
- Record and maintain recruitment plans, including screening and enrolment logs on a daily basis
- To keep online enrolment updated at real time
- Complete and file all relevant documentation
- Scan relevant source documents and ensure they are uploaded timeously
- Report on stats of participants recruited on a daily basis in the study handover book
- Shift handovers must be done in conjunction with the receiving shift leader and completed in the handover book before the start of each new shift
- Attend to data queries and resolve them accordingly
Customer Service
- Ensure all customer interaction (Both internal and external customers) is of the highest professional level
- Build and maintain authentic relationships with all stakeholders ensuring that all interactions are professional
Effective Self-management and performance management
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management
- Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
- Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
- Take ownership for driving own career development in attending training and development sessions and relevant meetings
Required minimum education and training:
- Enrolled Nurse Certificate (2 years) - (SANC registration)
- Demonstrable experience working in midwifery or with ante-natal clinics or programmes
Required minimum work experience:
- Minimum 1 year nursing experience in clinical research
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Certification in good clinical practice
- Experience working in a research and labour ward environment
- Ordered and systematic with strict compliance to protocols
- Tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
- Good administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Pro-active and adaptable
- Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
