About the position

iThemba LABS seeks to appoint an experienced Electronics Technician under Control Electronics and Software Engineering (CESE) division of the Accelerator Technical Support Department.

The incumbent will be responsible for providing technical support and maintenance services, including building, installation and repairs of the control system, focusing primarily on more than 400 high stability, high power, power supplies and the safety interlock systems for the particle accelerators.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily activities related to building, installation, configuration, testing, maintenance, fault-finding and repairs of the high stability, high power, magnet power supplies and other control system electronic modules and components
  • Equipment integration and testing
  • Compile technical documentation and product specifications
  • Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design and assembly
  • Ensure effective management of critical spare parts for power supplies and safety interlocking system
  • Responsible for procurement of power supplies and control system components
  • Ensure workplace health and safety complianceMinimum Requirements

Qulification:

  • National Diploma (NQF6) Electronics Engineering or equivalent

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in electronic or electrical engineering
  • Experience in interpreting electrical drawings and control and schematics

Knowledge:

  • Building, testing, maintenance, fault-finding and repair of various electronic equipment including power supplies or power electronics devices
  • Equipment assembly and testing
  • Strong practical knowledge of light current and heavy current electronics
  • Proficient in using test and measurement tool
  • PCB soldering, testing and installation

Additional Notes:

  • Programming experience (PLC programming and/or embedded systems programming)
  • Electronics design and circuit analysis

  • Experience with Interlock Systems

  • Experience with motion control systems
  • Good mechanical aptitude
