About the position
Our client is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join their analytics team within a leading financial services environment based in Johannesburg. This role focuses on delivering advanced analytics and machine learning solutions that drive measurable business value across core decisioning areas such as pricing, fraud, underwriting, claims, and marketing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and deploy machine learning models and advanced analytics solutions
- Extract insights from large and complex datasets to support business decision-making
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define analytical requirements and expected outcomes
- Design and execute experiments to validate hypotheses and analytical findings
- Build data structures, dashboards, and reporting tools to monitor model performance and stability
- Maintain and retrain existing models where required
- Support migration of on-premise solutions to cloud environments (Azure)
- Translate analytical insights into clear, business-friendly recommendations
Requirements:
- BSc in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering or related field
- Honours or Master's degree preferred
- Minimum 5 years' experience in data science or advanced analytics roles
- Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, Power BI, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience working with statistical analysis, machine learning, and predictive modelling
- Strong understanding of data visualisation and storytelling with data
Advantageous Experience:
- Experience in financial services (insurance preferred)
- Exposure to Azure cloud environments
- Experience with model deployment, monitoring, and retraining
- Knowledge of BI tools and statistical packages
