Cyclotron Operator at NRF National Research Foundation

About the position

Postion Summary:
iThemba LABS seeks to appoint a suitably qualified individual to be trained as Cyclotron Operator in the Acceleratop Operations and Technical Support department, within the South African Isotope Facility (SAIF) operations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operation of the cyclotron, changing beam energy, maintain beam quality and intensity
• Monitor electronic systems and sub-systems (analogue, power supplies, vacuum systems, cooling systems, RF amplifiers, beam diagnostics)Diagnose electronics problems/faults or mechanical faults and repair self if possible, contact backup personnel if problem is too specialisedMaintain documentation on beam information and statisticsTransfer of information to follow-up shift operators

Minimum Qualification:

• Bachelors Degree / Advanced Diploma / NQF 7

Minimum Experience:

• 3-3 years

• Tech in Electronics / Electrical / Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineering or equivalent, orB
• Sc (Physics)A minimum of 3 years’ relevant working knowledge and experience in:Maintenance and/or design of mechanical/electronic systemsInterfacing of electronicsProgramming and/or simulation codes Intermediate to advanced knowledge of electronics

Experience:

• Experience in a nuclear facility Familiarity with concepts such as vacuum, beam diagnostics, RF, etc

Knowledge:

• Familiarity with simulation toolsBasic understanding of radiation safety (advantageous)
