About the position

Manager: Technical (High Biocontainment Laboratories)

A leading public health laboratory environment is seeking an accomplished Manager: Technical to provide strategic and operational leadership for high biocontainment laboratory infrastructure. The role is responsible for the full lifecycle management of BSL-3 and BSL-4 facilities, ensuring optimal performance, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement in line with international best practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and engineering leadership for BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratory facilities
  • Oversee commissioning, certification, operation, maintenance, and continuous optimisation of high-containment infrastructure
  • Ensure rigorous biosafety and biosecurity oversight in compliance with international standards
  • Manage HVAC, effluent decontamination, waste sterilisation, and critical engineering systems
  • Lead compliance audits, risk assessments, and certification processes
  • Develop and manage Capex and Opex budgets, including contractor and vendor oversight
  • Drive strategic planning initiatives to support long-term operational excellence
  • Lead, mentor, and develop technical teams across multidisciplinary environments

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering
  • Formal training and certification in biosafety and biosecurity
  • Minimum 7 years' post-qualification experience in high biocontainment laboratory environments
  • At least 5 years' experience in a management or supervisory capacity
  • Demonstrated expertise in commissioning, certification, and maintenance of BSL-3 and BSL-4 facilities
  • In-depth knowledge of international biosafety and biosecurity standards
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, effluent treatment, and waste sterilisation technologies
  • Proven experience in financial planning, budgeting (Capex/Opex), and contractor management
  • Proficiency in CMMS, CAD software, and MS Office
  • Willingness to travel locally and internationally as required
